Have big stick, will travel…

January 25th, 2008

Ok, 10″isn’t exactly a big stick. But it sure makes a nice size for a ruler in a skirmish game. I have been wanting to come up with some type of ruler to use for demo games of Forsaken. In the number of games I have played I found that 10″and 6″rulers work very nicely for movement and combat in dense terrain. These sizes work for 90% of the measurements in the game, if not all of them. For the longer ranges there is a tape measure.

So I tried to make some rulers using plastruct strips. But it seems that they were a bit too fragile and a number of them were snapped during games, basically due to the notches cut in the plastic rod. I considered getting custom laser etched rulers but that was a bit too expensive for only a few rulers. I made up my mind to have another go at making rulers with plastic rod but making the increments as raised strips instead of cuts into the rod. But I still wasn’t satisfied with that. Then it came to me, I work at a company that prints vinyl stickers.

So I decided to come up with a design and see if it will work. Below is what I came up with. Now I just have to sit back and wait for them to be printed. Once done, I will try sticking them to plastic strips that are somewhat bendable. Hopefully they will work out as I am rather happy with the design. If they do, I think these will be better rulers than I originally had hoped for. It’s nice how things just seem to fall into place sometimes. I will post a photo once I get the actual stickers.

I think those will be very nice Audrey. They have a nice horror look to them with the blood splatter and it’s good to have your game logo on them! I use to use pre-measured and cut pipe cleaners for skirmish gaming… it was nice and flexible for bending around corners and other terrain pieces, so having your ruler thin and flexible will work out nice.
